Why isn't wavy hair goth?

Continuing the theme of last week's post, where I wondered why gold isn't goth, I turn to hair. So, I've always hated my hair. It's very thick, curly/wavy. I've always wanted straight hair, which was "traditional" goth style. I used to straight-iron my hair to get looks not unlike these instagram users:

But why though? Why does goth have to have straight-ironed straight hair? Not counting crossover genres like rockabilly (pin curls) or lolita (goldilocks curls) or cyber (dread falls)--like, if I wanted to wear those styles, I would, but I don't. The question is, can't a natural wave be dark fashion? of course the answer is an enthusiastic yes, but I'm not sure why it took me almost two decades to realize that the hair I have suits the aesthetic completely fine:

natural waves!
natural waves!

The only reason I wasn't happy with my hair was because I had an image of this ideal, and my hair didn't fit that. I'm happy I tossed away the ideal and now always wear it natural and curly:

Are you happy with your hair texture?

  1. I love curly hair! And think of the 80s when Goths crimped their hair! Love your two colour hair! My hair is pretty good, it’s got a mild natural wave. I have two complaints. 1. It was red but went brown, I wish it stayed red, so vampiric, witchy! 2. It totally does not rat out. My friend did my hair once and it had flattened again within the hour!

    1. Natural red hair is so pretty! So strange how hair changes.

  2. When I was a teen, I used to get perms so I, too, could have curly hair. Ack! I look back at my Past Self and shake my head. :) I am really digging that 2-color look in the last pic. I thought about doing that with the black and pick when I had a 20's bob but realized the upkeep was beyond what I can do myself.

My main complaint about my hair is how thin it is in the front. That's why I blow it forward so it looks like I have more than I do. :)

    1. Yeah the upkeep is something... That's why I did half my natural hair color and half blond... And I'm ok with the back not being perfect when I do the roots!

  3. I think for some reason we always want what we don't have, therefore I try to accept what I have in the looks department and work with it as best I can. I love the look of naturally wavy/curly hair because it has VOLUME!! I have naturally pin-straight hair, which many flat-iron devotees think would be a blessing. However, my hair does not dry nicely; even though it is straight if I want it to look shiny and flowing I, too, must use the flat iron and hair products (I HATE PUTTING PRODUCTS IN MY HAIR, ARGHH!!) This is why I almost never wear my hair down, it takes forever to dry it, put crap in it, and straighten it to the point where it will behave and look nice.....also I am continually plagued by a static charge and that doesn't help either.

    1. Haha we do want what we can't have because I love your hair! I hear you on those hair products... Hate using them too. Haha I wonder if your static is equivalent to our humidity frizz

  4. I used to do a Japanese hair straightening thingy. My hair would be super straight for a year! It was great but crazy expensive. I have the same kind of hair as you, its great for backcombing!!!

    1. That it is! Lol but I don't do that often, because my hair dreads so easily. I recently had to cut out a fist-sized dread, which is crazy because I have an undercut!

    2. I know, I can twist my hair and boom! Instant dread LOL!

  5. My hair is thin and frizzy and horridly split-ended; I can get a decent wave when I decide to use taming product... but that's ridiculously rare for me to do. Mostly, if I can get it untangled without losing half of it, I call it a successful hair day haha!

I envy how much hair you have. I would gladly spend any amount of time if I had that body-- oh I can just imagine the braids you can get. Even with my length, all I get is a little rat tail lol.

    1. All that hair is so heavy though. I got headaches all the time before I shaved 75% of it off! If I didn't, I'd look like cousin it, lol.

  6. This is an interesting topic. I was considering trying out a ntaruel curly perm. As my hairbstraight but kinky. Realistically I dislike spending money on hair dressers as they aren't necessary. I like my rat tails.
